A decade ago, most of the digital watches available required a battery for the LCD and mechanism. After the battery was drained it had to be replaced. So the watch user would have to usually get it replaced at the local watch store.

In the last decade, the technology for watches has improved to a great extent, and a majority of the watches now available have a self winding mechanism, which convert the mechanical energy into energy for the watch.
